Chapter 12

My alarm rang at six thirty in the morning and I woke up starving. I always wake up hungry if I eat right before bed. Makes no sense to me, but it happens every time.

We rushed through getting ready, because we didn’t want to keep Palmer waiting. At seven we were practically crowding around the door, waiting for his knock. By ten past, we had given up on him and thought we might head downstairs ourselves.

“We should be fine, as long as we stick together,” Thea said.

Delia frowned. “I don’t know that should is good enough. Isabella, text him and see if he’ll be here soon.”

I was sure he wouldn’t leave us waiting for long, but it was quarter past and I wasn’t going to last much longer without breakfast. I unlocked my phone, and as I did, it vibrated, alerting me to a text.

Running late with Arneson. Be there in five minutes. Wait for us.

I held my phone up so Thea and Delia could read it. “Thank the goddess. I’m not sure I’d make it much longer than that.”

Now both Thea and Delia were frowning. “I am not looking forward to eating breakfast with Arneson. Are you?” Thea asked.

“No. But Palmer is convinced he’s innocent, and as much as I don’t like it, I trust him.”

A loud knock at our door startled me. Delia jumped up to open the door.

“Check the peephole first,” I said. We’d never hear the end of it if Palmer thought we would open our door to anyone.

Delia checked and opened the door. Palmer walked in, but Arneson stayed in the hallway. The dark shadows under Palmer’s eyes told me he didn’t get much sleep last night. I opened my senses to him and saw what he needed was coffee and rest.

Poor Palmer. He must have been up half the night with Arneson. I didn’t think I’d have slept at all in that room, wondering if Arneson was going to snap and come after me next.

Arneson looked as tired as Palmer, but my senses told me he, too, just needed coffee and rest.

Palmer grinned at us. “Ready to go? I’m starving.”

“Absolutely,” I said.

“Does he have to be here too?” Thea asked.

“Thea!” Delia said.

“What? I’m just saying what we’re all thinking. I’m not comfortable eating breakfast with a man who may have murdered his wife.”

Arneson took a step forward, but stopped at a gesture from Palmer. “I’m setting some ground rules that we’re all going to follow.” He looked at each one of us, even Arneson. “Is that clear?”

Thea, Delia, and I nodded reluctantly.

“Good. We are one big, happy family today. Anyone not up for that can go straight home to Portsmouth.” He slowly looked to each of us. “Is that understood?”

We each nodded, but weren’t happy about it.

“Good. Now let’s go get breakfast.”

Palmer pressed the button for the elevator. “It was a rough night, and neither of us got much sleep,” he said to me.

The lobby was empty, except for one lone clerk at the check-in desk.
